If you’re considering a custom bridal suit, you probably already know you don’t want a dress. What you might not know yet is what the custom process actually looks like or whether it’s worth the investment compared to buying something off the rack.
This is the honest guide we wish existed when we were looking.
What “Custom” Actually Means
“Custom” gets used loosely in the wedding industry. A suit labeled custom at a department store might just mean you picked a color. True custom suiting means the garment is built from scratch using your measurements, your design choices, and a pattern that starts with your body.
At M & M Suit Shop, a custom bridal suit involves:
– A free consultation to discuss your vision and assess fit needs
– A mock suit: a sample version of your jacket and pants made in your measurements before the final fabric is cut
– A customization appointment where you choose your final fabric, lining, buttons, lapels, and silhouette
– A final fitting where your finished suit goes home with you
The mock suit is the part most people don’t expect, and the part that makes the biggest difference. It means you try on a version of your suit, see how it moves on your body, and request any changes before the final garment is made.
How Long Does a Custom Bridal Suit Take?
Our process takes approximately three months from your first appointment to your final fitting. Here’s how that breaks down:
Month one: Consultation and measurements. We get to know you, discuss your vision, and take your measurements for the mock suit.
Month two: Mock suit fitting and customizations. You try on your mock suit, make any adjustments, choose your final fabric and details, and approve the design before production begins.
Month three: Production and final fitting. Your suit is made and you come in for your final appointment.
We recommend booking at least four to five months before your wedding to give yourself breathing room. We cannot accommodate timelines shorter than three months as rushing the process compromises fit and quality.
What Does a Custom Bridal Suit Cost?
Most custom bridal suits at M & M Suit Shop range from $1,100 to $4,000, depending on fabric selection and design details. Here’s how payments work:
- Consultation: Free
- Mock suit deposit: $150 (paid when you decide to move forward)
- Design fee: $250 (due before your customization appointment)
- Final suit balance: Variable, paid after mock suit approval, minus the $150 deposit
Fabric is the biggest variable in final cost. A classic wool blend reads and wears differently than a jacquard or a structured brocade, and the prices reflect that. Most clients end up in the $2,000–$2,500 range. We’ll walk you through options at every price point during your appointment.
Custom vs. Off the Rack: Is It Worth It?
This is the real question. And the honest answer is: it depends.
Off the rack is worth considering if: You have a flexible timeline, you’ve found something that already fits your body well, and the look doesn’t need to be tailored to your specific proportions or personal design choices.
Custom is worth it if: You’ve tried other options and they don’t fit the way you need. If you want design input on every detail. If the garment needs to be made for a body that doesn’t fit standard sizing. If you want to wear something no one else is wearing. Or if you want the process itself to feel affirming and intentional.
For most of our clients, the decision comes after months of searching for something off the rack that almost works. By the time they book with us, they’re not asking whether custom is worth it. They already know.
Why We Designed Our Process This Way
M & M Suit Shop was started because one of us, Margaret, couldn’t find a wedding suit that worked. She went to a men’s tailor, was told they could “make it work,” and spent three and a half months in fittings before her wedding, fighting for a garment that was never designed for her body in the first place.
When we started this studio, we built the process we wish had existed. The mock suit exists so you can see what you’re getting before it’s made. The consultation is free because we believe you should feel certain before you commit. Every appointment is designed to feel like you’re being dressed for your moment and not squeezed into something close enough.
Who We Work With
We design custom bridal suits exclusively for queer women and AFAB nonbinary clients whose bodies fit a women’s pattern. Our studio in Charlotte, NC is an affirming space built specifically for this community.
First consultations are available virtually or in person. We recommend all subsequent appointments, mock suit fitting and final fitting, take place in person at our studio.
